This sloped Manchester backyard already had wonderful terraced
walls and useful patio spaces. The problem was too much concrete and gravel and
overwhelming reflected heat in the summer. The solution was to remove most of
the gravel to accommodate raised veggie beds and a curvy flagstone path through
lush plantings. A dramatic blue stain was used to cool down the concrete and
provide a bold background to colorful plantings that would soften the hard,
linear edges of the walls and patio.
